WWI was a horrible war. (And that's saying something, for wars.)
A number of the recent books I've read recently concerned WWI (including the one on George, Nicholas, and Wilhelm and the one I'm reading now on T.E. Lawrence, "Lawrence of Arabia"). The carnage the European governments of that age were willing to let their people suffer and the stupid decisions the military leaders made make anything done today pale in comparison.
